Sequel to the foregoing, the Institute organized the recognition/re-recognition exercise for the purpose of assessing the facilities and standard of tuition delivery at all recognized tuition centers and the new ones.

Difference Between ICAN Accredited Institution and Non-ICAN Accredited Institutions

The major difference between ICAN accredited institutions and non-ICAN institutions is in the length of time sent to become a professional accountant and the associate cost. Basically, less than 4% of eligible Nigerian institutions have this accreditation.

So when you want to choose the institution either university, polytechnic, or college of education as a study center, it is important you choose the institution’s ICAN grants accreditation.

How Can I get ICAN Exemption in Nigeria

The B.Sc. The accounting program of the University has gained special accreditation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) under its Mutual Cooperative Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI).

This means all accounting students who are studying under ICAN accredited institutions on graduation will be exempted from 11 subjects out of 16 subjects examined by ICAN.

So if you want to get an exemption under ICAN, it is better you choose any of the institutions that have accreditation from ICAN.

Is ICAN Certificate Recognised Outside Nigeria?

Sadly, ICAN is not globally recognized. But ICAN is recognized in Nigeria and West Africa, and even in the world as Nigeria’s professional Accounting body.

On the other hand, ACCA is more globally recognized although it is primarily UK-based. As much as ACCA is globally recognized, getting certified by them is quite difficult. But if you do not have the resources to write ACCA examinations yet, you should start immediately with ICAN exams.

Also, with ICAN qualification, you will be able to get some exemptions if you finally have the resources to embark on the ACCA journey.

Other offshore accounting professional bodies (such as ACCA (UK), and ICAEW (England & Wales) mostly rely on ICAN accreditation before granting subject exemptions to accounting graduates for their examinations.
